What a METAR report contains — and how the decoded view reads it
A METAR packs a full surface observation into one coded line: station, time in UTC, wind, visibility, present weather, cloud layers, temperature and dew point, and pressure. Take LEMD 211200Z 24008KT 9999 FEW045 28/12 Q1018 — Madrid-Barajas, day 21 at 12:00 UTC, wind from 240° at 8 knots, visibility 10 km or more, a few clouds at 4,500 ft, 28 °C with a dew point of 12 °C, QNH 1018 hPa. Our station pages show the raw line first (it is what ATIS and briefings use), then the same report decoded field by field, plus the wind on an instrument dial and the resulting flight rules category.
The flight rules chip — VFR, MVFR, IFR or LIFR — condenses the two limiting values, ceiling and visibility, into one glance. A broken layer below 1,000 ft or visibility under 3 statute miles turns a station IFR; below 500 ft or 1 mile it is LIFR. How the METAR TAF pair works for planning
The METAR tells you what the airfield is doing now; the TAF (terminal aerodrome forecast) covers what it is expected to do, typically over the next 24 to 30 hours, using the same coding conventions with change groups such as BECMG and TEMPO. Station pages on this site show both together — the observation for the go/no-go picture, the forecast for the alternates and the return leg. Reports come from the US NWS Aviation Weather Center feed and refresh continuously; they are informational and never replace an official briefing.
Frequently asked questions
How often is a METAR issued?
Most stations publish every 30 or 60 minutes, with special (SPECI) reports in between whenever conditions change significantly — a wind shift, visibility drop or a new cloud ceiling.
Is METAR wind direction true or magnetic?
In the written METAR the direction is degrees true; a tower reporting wind by radio gives it in magnetic. That difference matters when you convert the report into a runway crosswind figure.
What is the difference between METAR and TAF?
A METAR is an observation — what the instruments measured at a fixed time. A TAF is a forecast for the aerodrome area, written by a forecaster and amended when reality diverges. Planning needs both: the METAR for now, the TAF for arrival time.
Why does a station show no METAR?
Not every airfield hosts a reporting station — many small fields and most Spanish ULM campos publish no METAR at all. In that case use the nearest reporting airport and treat its values as regional guidance, not local truth.
